This talk will explain how to convert shape files into vector tiles which can then be stylized and published as a basemap through a local server. The talk will introduce open source tools such as  GDAL/OGR, tippecanoe, http-server, tilerserver-gl-light, and maputnik and how they work together to create a basemap that can be viewed using Mapbox-gl-js API in a browser.
